Why smart cattle farming?

Today, one of the most important industries in the country is the livestock industry, the most important of which is the breeding of dairy and beef cattle, fattening sheep and goats. Given the very high production of this industry, the need for automation is quite noticeable, so that fully automatic milking systems in dairy farms help to produce better and maintain the quality of milk; therefore, it is necessary to use smart systems in dairy farms as much as possible in order to prevent additional expenses, including labor and reduced production, and to improve the level of animal health, animal comfort, etc.

What is intelligent cattle farming like?

Since the feeding and milking of the animals is done by machine and the animal stalls and pens are open halls, its automation is as follows:

1. Heating and cooling control

In industrial dairy farms, most of the work is done either by machines or by workers, and the main automation in dairy and beef farms is the control of cooling and heating . Although the comfort temperature range of cows is between 24-25 degrees Celsius; they can tolerate up to -15 degrees. Therefore, in the warm seasons of the year, we can use the automation of foggers or ceiling fans to keep the livestock away from heat stress, and in the cold seasons, we can use floor heating systems and special heaters to keep the livestock away from cold stress, because for every degree of temperature decrease, the digestibility of the diet decreases by 1 percent; therefore, it is very important to provide a comfortable temperature for the livestock.

2. Circulation fan

In rest rooms where large numbers of livestock are kept, circulating fans are sometimes needed to move air throughout the room and provide proper ventilation for the livestock.

How can sheep and goat farming be made smarter?

Sheep and goat farming can be done to some extent in closed sheds, such as poultry farms. Due to the closed environment, we have a closed ecosystem whose parameters can be controlled with an automated system; however, along with the system, human resources are also required.

1. Ventilation

Ventilation is one of the most important parts of raising sheep and goats in a closed barn, as its role in removing ammonia and carbon dioxide and moving air is very effective. Since these animals are sensitive to drafts, we must determine the number of fans and then the number of inlets and plan the ventilation system accordingly.

2. Temperature

Sheep are more sensitive to high ambient temperatures, wind chills, and humidity; however, goats are more sensitive to cold due to their hair and fur covering their bodies, and they need temperatures between 12-21 degrees and can tolerate temperatures as low as -17 degrees; therefore, to prevent heat stress, ventilation and fogging systems should be used in indoor breeding halls.

3. Humidity

One of the factors that can make breathing easier for livestock is the humidity level in the barn. Humidity makes livestock breathe easier, and the appropriate level should be between 25%-70%. The most important factors that affect humidity levels are when fans are turned on and off, when foggers are operating, and the temperature of the barn.

4. Ammonia and CO2 control

Ammonia from feces and carbon dioxide from breathing are too dangerous and should be removed in ventilation and replaced with fresh, oxygen-rich air. The normal level of ammonia should not exceed 20 ppm because it can cause disease and reduce livestock production.

5. Light

Light is one of the requirements for animal comfort and can play a significant role in reducing vascular and cardiac problems and production efficiency; of course, it would be better if sunlight could be used during the day and 100-watt lamps could be used for every 46 square meters at dusk; although this requires that the light intensity be such that artificial light is not needed inside the pen during the day, otherwise artificial lamps must be used all day long, which can be controlled by automatic programming.

How to be aware of the quality of our automatic breeding?

1. Danger system

Most of the time, due to the high workload, the farmer remains unaware of the failure of some of his systems. One of the advantages of the intelligent control system is the automatic troubleshooting capability, which in case of a problem, notifies the farmer of the failure of the barn systems by sounding an alarm and notifying him via mobile phone so that he can repair it as soon as possible .

2. Online salon monitoring

Remotely observing the parlor, especially from the milking parlor, pen, and cow pens, is a very effective factor for checking activity, feed amount, how workers are performing in the milking parlor, etc., and by having control tables of livestock parameters such as feed amount, water consumption, milk production amount, milking frequency, etc. online on your computer, better management can be achieved.
