What is industrial automation?

Industrial automation refers to the use of control systems (e.g. computers) instead of humans to guide and control industrial machinery and production processes, with the goal of reducing the need for human intervention. Automation literally means “automatic control and guidance of a device.” The goal of automation and the use of robots is to increase the efficiency of industrial and manufacturing equipment. Coordination and fit between machines and robots and the creation of a network in a production system are the results of the use of automation technology.

The industrial automation system is responsible for more than just controlling the production process, which is regulated by relevant experts and includes:

  • Information exchange between different parts of production
  • Establishing control strategies in the factory
  • Creating an intermediary between the user and the controlled collection

The production process is divided into three parts, production, packaging and distribution, according to the type of product in question, with production being the most important part of the manufacturing process. Moving and cutting robots; from measuring the quality of raw materials, performing preliminary manufacturing operations on them to processing the final product and performing final product control tests, are a constant in this part of most production lines. However, since all products and products need to be packaged at the end of the production process and factors such as ease of transportation, duration of use, health issues, etc. affect the quality of the product and its sales distribution, it requires human supervision. The distribution part is carried out from the time the products are placed in freight vehicles to the time the product is offered in stores. At this stage, the use of special loading robots and intelligent transportation lines is one of the most important achievements of automation in the distribution sector. The industrial automation system plays an important role even at the management levels of production. This is done through human machine interfaces (HMI) because in addition to controlling the system, it is easier to collect, synchronize information, and display it at different management levels. Controlling the system remotely is easily possible with the help of HMI.

Control components in an industrial automation system

Automation consists of three basic parts: meters, controllers, and actuators.

Gauges: Gauges are the eyes of control systems. Every measuring device consists of three basic components: sensor, transducer, and transmitter.

  • Sensor: A sensor is a component that is sensitive to physical parameters such as motion, heat, light, pressure, electricity, magnetism, and other energy states and reacts when stimulated, without requiring external energy for this reaction.
  • Transducer: A transducer is a component that converts energy states into one another. The sensor delivers the measured parameter to the transducer, which then converts it into a signal that the controller can understand; therefore, it requires an external energy source to perform this conversion.
  • Transmitter: A transmitter is a device that converts a transducer output signal into a standard signal that can be transmitted. The most popular transmitter standards include the 4 to 20 mA and 0 to 10 V standards.

Controllers: The second part of the instrument is the control section. Control is the process of directing and maintaining one or more processes to a desired or desired state or states. This concept includes quantitative, qualitative, safety, and environmental control, which are the basic objectives of control.

Actuators: Actuators are devices that receive output signals from the controller and act accordingly. The main output devices include control valves and electric motors. These devices control the measured parameters to the desired and desired value.

Automation application

Today, the use of industrial automation and precision instruments is abundant in various industries and industrial processes. Process control and complex measurement systems used in industries such as oil, gas, petrochemical, chemical, food, automotive, etc. require very precise and sensitive instruments. Recent technical advances in process control and measurement of various industrial parameters such as pressure, temperature, flow, etc. have increased product quality and reduced production costs.

Monitoring

Another important topic related to industrial automation is monitoring. Today, monitoring is one of the basic needs of many industries, especially large industries. Many large industries such as petrochemical industries, energy production industries, chemical industries, etc. are unable to continue their work without using a suitable monitoring system. Monitoring is the process of collecting the desired information from different parts of an industrial unit and displaying it in the desired format to achieve the following goals

  • Display the current status of each machine and device
  • Display and record important and vital parameters of a system
  • Display and record various alarms when errors occur in the system
  • Display of the location of the failure and the time of occurrence of the fault in each of the system components.
  • Displaying production processes using appropriate graphic tools
  • Changing and modifying set points during the production process
  • Possibility to change some control processes through the monitoring program
  • Recording information and parameters desired by managers, such as operating times, production rates, amounts of raw materials consumed, amounts of energy consumed, etc.
